SOME TIPS WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW AN EXACT WORD/ CUANDO NO CONOCEMOS LA PALABRA EXACTA

Si no conoces o no recuerdas la palabra exacta hay muchas cosas que puedes hacer para evitarlo.
Aquí van algunas estrategias que utilizan incluso los nativos ingleses.

  1. General words/Palabras generales:
Si no te acuerdas de la palabra "surgeon" (cirujano), puedes usar la palabra "doctor"
Si no te acuerdas de la palabra "cultery" (cubiertos), puedes usar "knife, fork and spoon".
  2. Give a description / hacer una descripción.
    It's a person who....(es unapersona que...)
    It's a thing that....(es una cosa que....)
    It's a place where....(es un lugar donde...)
  3. Describe the purpose or function/describir su propósito o función.
    It´s used to+infinitivo/for+ ing
Si no te acuerdas de la palabra "scissors" (tijeras), puedes decir "it's used to cut paper" o "it's used for curring paper"
  4. Synonyms / sinónimos
Si no te acuerdas de la palabra "tiny" (pequeñito), puedes usar "very small" (muy pequeño)
  5.  Antonyms / antónimos.
Si no conoces la palabra "weak" (débil), puedes usar "not strong" (no es fuerte)
  6. Aproximaciones (It´s a kind of.../It´s a sort of...)
Si no conoces la palabra "bungalow", puedes decir "it´s a kind of house" o "it's a sort of a house" (es una especie de casa)

f you don’t know or can’t remember an exact word – don’t worry! There are lots of things you can do to communicate without saying the exact word. These are very useful strategies that even native speakers use.

General words

If you can’t remember the word ‘surgeon’, you could say a more general word like ‘doctor’.

Examples

If you don’t know the word ‘cutlery’, you could give examples such as ‘knife, fork and spoon’.

Relative clauses to give a description

(It’s a person who ... / thing that ... / place where ... )
If you don’t know the word ‘briefcase’, you could say ‘It’s a thing that people use to carry papers to work’.

Describe the purpose or function (It’s used to + infinitive / for + -ing)

If you don’t know the word ‘scissors’, you could say ‘They are used to cut paper’ or ‘They are used for cutting paper’.
This strategy works well with objects that have a clear use or function.

Synonyms (words that mean the same)

If you don’t know the word ‘tiny’, you could say ‘very small’.
This strategy works well with nouns and adjectives.

Antonyms (opposite words)

If you don’t know the word ‘weak’, you could say ‘not strong’.
This strategy works well with adjectives.

Approximations (It’s a kind of ... / It’s a sort of ...)

If you don’t know the word ‘bungalow’, you could say ‘It’s a kind of house’ or ‘It’s a sort of house’.

LA RAE CONTRA LOS ANGLICISMOS

¡Hello everyone!

GRAMMAR UNIT 9 FIRST CONDITIONAL CLAUSE

The First Conditional

The first conditional has the present simple after 'if', then the future simple in the other clause:
  • if + present simple, ... will + infinitive
It's used to talk about things which might happen in the future. Of course, we can't know what will happen in the future, but this describes possible things, which could easily come true.
  • If it rains, I won't go to the park.
  • If I study today, I'll go to the party tonight.
  • If I have enough money, I'll buy some new shoes.
  • She'll be late if the train is delayed.
  • She'll miss the bus if she doesn't leave soon.
  • If I see her, I'll tell her.

HOW TO TELL A STORY (TIME CONNECTORS, PRESENT SIMPLE)

First step to tell a story is to link your ideas together. Once you sequence them it is easy for you to put it in words.

Beginning

If you are going to tell your story after someone else has already spoken to you, then you can start by saying:
- That reminds me!
- Something similar happened to me.
- Words like Firstly, to start off with can help you to start telling your story or any past event.

Continuing

Words that help you to connect or continue your story are:
- Then
- After that
- Next

Interruptions / New elements to the story

While you are telling your story and certain elements have to be added then you can use words like:
- Suddenly
- Unexpectedly

Ending

To end the story words that can be used are:
- Finally
- In the end
- Eventually
- Lastly

Tenses

Varieties of tenses are used to tell stories such as:
1) Present Tense -- used for telling jokes, or to give a dramatic effect.

2) Past simple- used to tell a story in a chronological order
3) Past continuous -- used to describe activities in progress at the time of your story or give a background to it.

Use wide range of vocabulary to make your story interesting and hope you enjoy this lesson.

Videogame of the week - Stardew Valley

You’ve inherited your grandfather’s old farm plot in Stardew Valley. Armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, you set out to begin your new life. Can you learn to live off the land and turn these overgrown fields into a thriving home? It won’t be easy. Ever since Joja Corporation came to town, the old ways of life have all but disappeared. The community center, once the town’s most vibrant hub of activity, now lies in shambles. But the valley seems full of opportunity. With a little dedication, you might just be the one to restore Stardew Valley to greatness!
